Kompang Jidor – A Traditional Malay Percussion Art
Kompang Jidor is a traditional form of kompang music where a group of kompang players is accompanied by a single jidor drum player. This rhythmic and melodic ensemble holds deep cultural and historical significance in Malay heritage.
Jidor Drum
The jidor is a large, double-headed barrel drum, typically played with a mallet or hammer stick. Its deep, resonant tones provide a rhythmic foundation for Kompang Jidor performances. It is similar to the bass drum.
Historical Significance
Once a common tradition in Johor, Malaysia, Kompang Jidor is now becoming less widespread, though it remains an important part of Malay cultural heritage.
Performances & Instruments
Kompang Jidor performances often feature a group of men dressed in traditional Malay attire, playing the kompang and jidor drums while singing selawat (Islamic hymns). Additional instruments such as gongs, xylophones, and other traditional Malay percussion may also be used to enrich the musical experience.
Cultural Importance
As a reflection of Islamic traditions and local customs, Kompang Jidor remains a meaningful and symbolic performance art, preserving the spiritual and communal aspects of Malay culture.
